Memoriam
Lloyd Cook, Director, Battling Bucs Band, 1957
|

With a very heavy heart, I have been asked to let you know that our beloved band director, Lloyd Cook, passed away peacefully yesterday, October 8, 2007, at home in Saltillo, Texas, with his family by his side. One of his daughters called me this morning at her mother's request so that the word could reach as many of the old Buc Band members as possible. The arrangements are as follows:
Visitation: West Oaks Funeral Home, Sulphur Springs, Tx. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 6p.m. - 8p.m.
Private burial at the gravesite Thursday morning.
Funeral services: Thursday, 2 p.m. at Central Baptist Church, Sulphur Springs, Texas. Mr. Cook requested that his casket not be at the services "because he would not be there".
If you wish to send cards, Barbara and Lloyd Cook's address is: 11456 U.S. Highway 67, Saltillo, Texas 75478.
I will have a large, beautiful plant sent to the funeral home on behalf of the "old" Band of the Buccaneers.
Please forward this message to other Buc band members.
Regards,
Barbara Wilson Hollis

Parking Information
We have
reserved 100 prepaid parking spaces at the American Bank Center
for Friday night BUT YOU WILL HAVE TO PICK THEM UP AT THE HOTEL
HOSPITALITY SUITE BETWEEN 3:00 AND 5:00 P.M. ON FRIDAY (10th
Floor, Bayfront Plaza Hotel). If you don't have a pass, you
will have to fork over $5.00 to park and take a chance as to where
they can find a place. There are a zillion events going on
at one time in that complex. Thanks. |

Note:
The Friday
Miller Football Game is NOT homecoming. ( we were initially told
otherwise )
The Friday
mixer has been re-scheduled for 7:00 pm (instead of 6:00 pm) in
order to allow plenty of time for classmates who are attending the
game to get back to the hotel in time.

Elvis
Contest
For comic
relief during the Friday mixer, our (male) members of the class of
'57 are invited to don sideburns, sunglasses, and guitar and give
an Elvis impersonation their best shot. At a minimum, a set
of Elvis sideburns and sunglasses will be provided, and we may
even have a cape available.
Bubba Clark
has offered the loan of his guitar, so those of you who play can
do a live presentation. If you don't play guitar, we can
probably find you an accompanist. This is a freestyle
competition, so you're free to do whatever you want. Your
objective is to make the girls squeal, 50's style and generally
keep the crowd roaring. We'll caucus as a group
beforehand to figure out exactly how this shindig does down. |

Miller, Ray honor former stars
Bucs will induct 10, Texans six to respective Halls of Fame tonight
From
Caller Times Staff Reports
Friday, September 22, 2006
Miller and Ray will honor their 2006 hall of fame inductees at
halftime of tonight's game at Buc Stadium.
Miller will induct Bill Tanner (Class of '46),
A.R. "Red"
Brown ('47), Alfred Yanez ('51),
John Glusing ('57), Rudy Vasquez
('66), Levi Johnson ('69), Tom Gipson ('70), Michael Powell ('75),
Gerald Allen ('77) and Mario Flores ('91).
Tanner played football for the Bucs in the '40s where he was a
two-way starter. He went on to play at Rice, Del Mar College and the
U.S. Army.
Brown helped lead Miller to the state track and field title in
1947, finishing second in state in the 100 and 220. He went on to
Rice, where he was part of the national champion mile-relay team.
Yanez starred at Miller in football, track and baseball. He went on
to play all three sports at Hardin-Simmons and later was a
professional boxer, posting a 29-3 record.
Glusing was an end and middle linebacker for the Bucs and later
played at SMU, where he was all-Southwest Conference as a freshman.
Vasquez set the school-record in the mile run, winning state in
1966 with a time of four minutes, 27.10 seconds.
Johnson was a receiver, defensive back and linebacker for Miller
before starring at Texas A&I and enjoying a five-year career with
the Detroit Lions in the NFL.
Gipson ran the option as Miller's quarterback and also played
basketball and ran track. He ran for 15 touchdowns and threw for 12
more in his two seasons as QB.
Powell was a standout basketball player at Miller, going on to play
at Kilgore Junior College and East Texas State University.
Allen was an all-district and honorable mention all-state football
player at Miller before going on to play at Texas A&I.
Flores was a star pitcher for the Bucs, leading them to the area
playoffs in 1991, and he still holds most of Miller's pitching
records. He played college ball at Laredo Community College and Texas
A&M-Kingsville and went on to play professionally in several
independent leagues.
